Chennai Authorities Ban Boat Rides at Pulicat Lake for Pongal Festivities
Chennai authorities have imposed a complete ban on boat rides at Pulicat lake during the Pongal festivities. This decision aims to prevent potential mishaps as thousands of people are expected to gather at the spot. The government has stated that violators will face punishment.
Historical Context and Current Concerns
Boating at Pulicat lake was originally banned after a tragic incident in December 2011. At that time, twenty-two people drowned during a boat ride. Despite the ban, some local fishermen continue to offer boat rides to visitors. This practice raises serious safety concerns.
Police have stepped up their vigil significantly. A large number of people are likely to visit the lake on Kaanum Pongal this Saturday. Authorities are taking no chances with public safety.
Coordinated Safety Meeting and Measures
On Wednesday, Thirupalaivanam police hosted a crucial meeting to discuss safety measures for tourists. The meeting included officials from multiple departments. Fisheries, revenue, and forest departments were represented. The Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group also participated.
Representatives from nearby fishing villages attended. Members of various voluntary organizations took part as well. Officials highlighted that similar precautionary measures proved effective recently. These measures helped prevent fatalities during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Festival Arrangements and Security Deployment
As part of the festival arrangements, the Pulicat lighthouse will open to the public starting on Pongal day. Visitors will need to pay an entry fee of ten rupees. Avadi joint commissioner of police R Sivakumar personally inspected the arrangements at the lighthouse. He checked the newly installed lift and other facilities.
Policemen on duty received clear instructions. They must remain alert and enforce the ban on illegal boating strictly. Nearly two thousand five hundred police personnel will deploy for security duties across Avadi city. This massive deployment underscores the seriousness of the situation.
Enhanced Monitoring and Patrols
Police have intensified monitoring at various public places. Ennore beach is under close watch. Several water bodies are receiving increased attention. These include Chembarambakkam, Puzhal, Sholavaram, and Porur lakes.
Authorities are conducting multiple types of patrols to ensure safety. Route marches are happening regularly. Foot patrols cover key areas extensively. Night patrols add an extra layer of security during the festivities.
The comprehensive approach aims to create a safe environment for all visitors. Chennai authorities are leaving nothing to chance this Pongal season.
