Delhi Police Arrests Fraud Accused After 18-Year Manhunt in Himachal
Delhi Police has successfully arrested a 48-year-old man from Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district. The arrest comes nearly 18 years after the accused jumped bail and went absconding. Police officials confirmed the details of this significant operation.
Accused Nabbed in Manali Under Fake Identity
The accused, identified as Amit Nishchal, was apprehended from Manali. He had been living there under a fake identity and working as a hotel manager. Nishchal was posing as Sonu Chauhan to evade law enforcement for almost two decades.
Nishchal was originally a resident of the Vishnu Garden area in Gurgaon, Haryana. Authorities declared him a proclaimed offender in connection with a 2001 case. This case was registered at the DBG Road police station in Delhi.
The charges against him include various sections of the Indian Penal Code. These sections pertain to theft, cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The case is linked to an organised bank fraud syndicate.
Police Operation Based on Technical Surveillance
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora provided insights into the operation. The Crime Branch received specific inputs about the accused operating under an assumed identity. Based on technical surveillance and field intelligence, police ascertained his movement pattern and present location in Manali.
A police team was subsequently dispatched to Himachal Pradesh. They arrested Nishchal from his hiding place. Indora emphasized the role of modern investigative techniques in tracking down the fugitive.
Previous Criminal History and Connections
Investigations have revealed additional details about Nishchal's criminal past. He was allegedly involved in a similar case of cheating, theft, and forgery. This case was registered by Mumbai CID in 2001.
During his judicial custody at a Mumbai jail, Nishchal came into contact with Om Prakash Singh. Singh, also known as OP Singh, was a notorious gangster at the time. This connection highlights the accused's involvement with criminal networks.
In 2002, Mumbai Police arrested Nishchal again. This arrest was in connection with a case registered at the Santa Cruz police station. The case involved IPC sections related to robbery and house-trespass.
Nishchal later secured bail in this case but allegedly absconded. He first shifted to Delhi and later relocated to Manali. In Manali, he adopted a false identity to avoid detection by authorities.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough for Delhi Police. It underscores their commitment to pursuing long-standing cases and bringing fugitives to justice. The case will now proceed through the legal system for further action.
