Guntur IG Warns: Social Media Abuse Leads to Legal Action
Guntur IG: No Right to Abuse Others Online

Guntur Inspector General of Police Sarvashreshta Tripathi has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the growing misuse of social media platforms. He emphasized that online abuse and provocative behaviour will attract serious legal consequences.

Freedom of Expression Has Legal Boundaries

In a detailed interaction, IG Tripathi clarified that the constitutional freedom of expression is not absolute. He stressed that this freedom must operate within well-defined legal and ethical frameworks. Social media, while offering vast space for constructive dialogue and awareness, is being misused by many to cross limits and harm others, he noted.

The senior police official urged citizens to exercise restraint and personal responsibility. He remarked that digital platforms are an extension of the real world, and the anonymity or physical distance they provide should not encourage irresponsible actions. "People should fix their own boundaries and behave as responsible citizens. No one has any right to humiliate, harass, troll or abuse others just because they have a mobile in their hands," Tripathi stated.

Broad Definition of Cybercrime

IG Tripathi explained that cyber offences extend far beyond financial fraud or data theft. Any online activity causing emotional, mental, or reputational harm to an individual can be treated as a cybercrime. He highlighted the alarming rise in cases of cyber harassment, misinformation, and online threats, underlining the urgent need for greater public awareness.

He also cautioned users that posting violent views or inflammatory content exposes them to legal scrutiny. "Digital footprints are easily traceable," he warned, indicating that law enforcement can track down offenders.

Public Role in Digital Policing

Tripathi emphasized the crucial partnership between citizens and the police in maintaining order online. As law enforcement cannot monitor every corner of the digital space, he urged responsible individuals to act as partners. This includes reporting suspicious accounts, offensive posts, and harmful content to the authorities.

"Every citizen is a police in unravelling the criminals," he said, appealing for public support to help police efforts rather than amplifying tensions through provocative content.

Improved Law and Order in Coastal Zone

Shifting focus to overall policing, IG Tripathi highlighted a notable improvement in law and order across the South Coastal Zone, which comprises five districts under his jurisdiction. He attributed the reduction in crime rates to proactive measures.

The key initiatives that contributed to a more secure environment include:

  • Intensified surveillance systems.
  • Quicker police response mechanisms.
  • Stronger engagement with local communities.

While appreciating public cooperation, Tripathi reiterated that collective responsibility, both offline and online, is fundamental to sustaining peace and preventing crime in the region.
