Gurugram Vehicle Thefts Drop Over 11% in 2026 First Five Months

Gurugram has recorded an 11.48% reduction in vehicle thefts during the first five months of 2026, with 902 cases reported between January 1 and May 31, down from 1,019 incidents during the same period in 2025, according to official police data. This decline marks a significant improvement for a district that saw a total of 2,600 vehicles stolen throughout 2025.

Daily Theft Averages Decline

The daily frequency of vehicle thefts has decreased from an average of 6.75 vehicles stolen per day in the first five months of 2025 to approximately 5.97 vehicles per day in the same period this year. While overall numbers remain a concern, authorities noted that thefts of luxury and mid-segment cars have been brought under tighter control, with only 72 cars reported stolen so far in 2026.

Police Crackdown and Transit Routes

Local law enforcement attributes the improvement to heightened vigilance and a strategic crackdown on organized crime. Police investigations have tracked stolen vehicles to the Mewat region, a notorious transit hub where vehicles are dismantled for parts or funneled into illegal resale networks. Intensified night patrolling and targeted check posts at key borders have made it harder for interstate auto-lifter gangs to transport stolen property out of the district.

Gurugram police spokesperson Inspector Sandeep Kumar stated, "Our targeted crackdown on active auto-lifter modules and increased night dominance have effectively broken the backbone of these interstate gangs. While two-wheelers remain highly vulnerable due to their high resale value, our teams are working relentlessly to further squeeze the transit routes and dismantle the receivers of stolen property in areas like Mewat. We are committed to maintaining this momentum to ensure the safety of every resident’s vehicle."

Comparison of Vehicle Theft Trends

Between January 1 and May 31, vehicle theft cases dropped from 1,019 in 2025 to 902 in 2026, reflecting an 11.48% net improvement. The data underscores the effectiveness of ongoing police operations, though two-wheelers remain a primary target for thieves due to their high resale value and ease of transport.
