Kanpur Jewellery Theft Accused Makes Daring Police Station Escape

A man arrested for a jewellery theft in Kanpur executed a bold escape from police custody on Thursday. The incident occurred at the Gujaini police station in Jarauli Phase-2, sending shockwaves through the local law enforcement.

Escape from Custody

The accused, identified as Kallu alias Vishal, was being escorted from the lock-up to the bathroom by home guard Rajkumar. Police officials were preparing to send him to jail after questioning. When the two men reached a secluded area behind the office, the accused allegedly pushed the home guard with force.

Rajkumar fell to the ground, unable to prevent the escape. Kallu then scaled the back wall of the police station and vanished into the adjacent slum area. The maze-like lanes provided perfect cover for his getaway.

Police Response and Manhunt

Officers immediately gave chase, but the accused disappeared into the narrow alleys. Police teams were quickly scrambled to track him down. A large-scale search operation is now underway across Kanpur.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police confirmed the deployment of multiple teams to recapture the escaped accused. "We have mobilized all available resources to arrest the accused," the DCP stated. "Our teams are working round the clock to bring him back into custody."

Background of the Case

This escape follows a major jewellery theft that occurred on December 14, 2025. Three masked thieves broke into Balaji Jewellers, owned by Gaurav Verma of Gopalpuram Society. They made off with approximately three kilograms of silver jewellery.

Police cracked the case on December 20, arresting two accused persons identified as Vishal Gupta alias Mannu Bihari and Karan. Both were sent to jail. Kallu was arrested late on Wednesday while allegedly planning another criminal activity.

Disciplinary Action Taken

The station in-charge filed a formal complaint following the escape incident. This led to a report being registered against three individuals:

  • The escaped accused, Kallu alias Vishal
  • Home guard Rajkumar who was escorting him
  • A woman constable working as a GD clerk at the station

The woman constable has been placed under suspension pending investigation. Authorities have also sent a letter to the commandant requesting disciplinary action against home guard Rajkumar.

Current Status

Police continue their intensive search for the escaped accused. The incident has raised serious questions about security protocols at police stations. Local residents in Kanpur are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately.

This escape marks a significant embarrassment for the Kanpur police department, coming just days after they had successfully solved the jewellery theft case. The investigation into both the original theft and the escape continues simultaneously.
