Kolkata: Two separate snatching incidents were reported from the northern and southern parts of the city, where small-time criminals targeted early-morning walkers and elderly citizens returning home.
North Kolkata Incident
In the first incident reported from north Kolkata, a 60-year-old woman became the victim of a daring snatching right outside her doorstep. According to cops, the incident took place on Wednesday evening at around 7:50 PM under Shyampukur police station.
The victim, Sampa Bose, a resident of Bose Para Lane, was entering her residence when an unidentified miscreant approached her stealthily from behind. Before she could raise an alarm, the youth forcefully snatched her gold neck chain, weighing approximately 7 grams, and fled into the dark alleys. Following her formal complaint later that night, the Shyampukur police registered a case under Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertains to snatching.
South Kolkata Incident
Meanwhile, a daylight robbery targeted an early-morning walker on Mayfair Road in south Kolkata’s Karaya area. The victim, Ajay Kumar Menda (50), a resident of the nearby East End Gardens, was out for his routine morning walk around 6:30 am when two bikers wearing helmets pulled up behind him near a local sweet shop. The pillion rider lunged forward and snatched Menda’s high-end smartphone straight from his hand before speeding away. The stolen device contained two active SIM cards, and the victim has provided investigators with the handset’s dual IMEI numbers to facilitate tracking.
Police Investigation
Local police stations have initiated probes into both cases. Sleuths are currently scanning and reviewing CCTV footage from the respective neighborhoods to map the escape routes and identify the registration plates of the two-wheelers involved in the street crimes.
