A 25-year-old man died after diving into a swimming pool in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Sunday, turning a fun holiday into a tragedy. The victim, identified as Akshay Bhoir, a resident of Vasai, was visiting a resort in the Palghar area with friends when the incident occurred.
Incident Details
According to the police, Bhoir dived into the pool but failed to resurface. His friends and other bystanders noticed his absence and alerted the resort staff. They pulled him out of the water and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the circumstances. Preliminary reports suggest that Bhoir may have hit his head on the pool floor, causing him to lose consciousness.
Previous Similar Incidents
This incident is not isolated. In recent months, several drowning cases have been reported in Maharashtra's swimming pools and water bodies. In March, a 16-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool in Thane. In February, a 22-year-old woman died after slipping and falling into a pool in Navi Mumbai.
Safety Measures and Warnings
Authorities have repeatedly warned about the dangers of diving into unknown waters. The pool in Palghar was reportedly 10 feet deep, and Bhoir was not an experienced swimmer. Diving into shallow water or without proper knowledge can lead to severe head injuries or drowning.
According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. In India, an estimated 38,000 people drown each year.
Community Reaction
Friends and family of the deceased expressed shock and grief. "He was a cheerful person and loved adventure. We never imagined this would happen," said a friend. The resort management has been asked to cooperate with the investigation.
Local authorities have urged resort owners to ensure safety measures such as lifeguards, depth markers, and warning signs around pools. They also advised swimmers to avoid diving unless they are trained and aware of the pool depth.
