Days after a fatal stabbing on a Mumbai local train, another violent incident occurred near Mahim railway station when a 34-year-old man was stabbed following a minor altercation. The attack took place on Saturday evening, leaving the victim injured and sparking concerns over public safety in the city.
Details of the Incident
According to the Mumbai Police, the victim, identified as Ravi Shankar, was waiting near the station's western exit when he got into a verbal dispute with two unidentified men. The argument escalated quickly, and one of the suspects pulled out a knife, stabbing Shankar in the abdomen. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Passersby alerted the police, who arrived shortly and rushed Shankar to a nearby hospital. Doctors stated that his condition is stable and he is out of danger. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempt to murder.
Arrests Made
Senior Inspector Mahesh Patil of the Mahim police station confirmed that two suspects have been arrested within hours of the incident. “We have taken into custody two individuals based on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. They are being interrogated to ascertain the exact motive,” Patil said. The arrested men are residents of nearby slums and have prior criminal records, according to police sources.
Context of Recent Violence
This stabbing comes just a week after a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death inside a moving local train near Ghatkopar station. That incident, which occurred during a quarrel over a seat, had triggered widespread protests and demands for better security on suburban trains. In response, the Government Railway Police (GRP) had increased patrolling and deployed additional personnel at major stations.
However, Saturday's attack outside Mahim station, which is not under GRP jurisdiction but under the Mumbai Police, has raised questions about the effectiveness of these measures. Local commuters expressed fear and anger. “We are not safe even outside the station. The police need to do more,” said a daily traveler who wished to remain anonymous.
Police Response and Investigation
Mumbai Police have assured that they are taking the matter seriously. Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Region) Vishal Thakur stated, “We have increased surveillance in and around railway stations. The accused will be dealt with strictly, and we urge the public to remain calm.” The police are also reviewing security camera footage from the area to identify any other individuals involved.
Investigators are looking into whether the altercation was purely personal or had any other underlying causes. The weapon used in the attack has not yet been recovered. The arrested suspects are expected to be produced in court on Monday.
