Patna: 1 dead, 4 hurt in SUV-van collision on Atal Path

A tragic road accident on Patna's Atal Path in the early hours of Monday claimed one life and left four others injured. The collision involved a speeding SUV and a stationary pickup van, resulting in devastating consequences.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The incident occurred around 3 am on Monday under the jurisdiction of the S K Puri police station. According to police, an SUV, returning from Sonepur at high speed, crashed into the back of a pickup van that was parked on the side of the road. The van, driven by 50-year-old Ramsevak from Shivpuri, Chitkohra, had suffered a puncture, and the driver was attempting repairs when the collision happened.

The impact of the crash was severe. The front portion of the SUV was completely destroyed, while the pickup van sustained heavy damage. The van's load of animal fodder sacks was scattered across the road. A loud crash echoed in the area, alerting local residents to the tragedy.

Victims and Immediate Aftermath

The deceased was identified as Aditya Kumar, son of Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Mithapur in Patna. He was the driver of the SUV. S K Puri SHO Jitendra Rana stated that the SUV was occupied by four youths returning from a party. While the airbags in the vehicle deployed for the three passengers, who sustained minor injuries, the airbag on the driver's side did not activate. This failure is believed to have contributed to the fatal injuries suffered by Aditya Kumar, who later died during treatment at a private hospital.

The pickup van driver, Ramsevak, was admitted to a private hospital in a critical condition. He was transporting fodder from Chhapra to his mill in Patna when the tyre puncture forced him to stop.

Police Investigation and Cause

Upon receiving information, the Gandhi Maidan traffic police seized both vehicles for further investigation. SHO Jitendra Rana confirmed that preliminary findings point to overspeeding as the primary cause of the accident. The investigation is ongoing to ascertain all factors involved in the tragic event.

This incident has once again highlighted the dangers of speeding on city roads, especially during late-night hours, leading to irreversible loss.
