Pune Police Bulldoze 399 Modified Exhausts in Major Crackdown

In a dramatic display of enforcement, the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police on Friday crushed a staggering 399 illegally modified motorcycle exhausts using a bulldozer. The operation, conducted in Sangvi, was part of a targeted crackdown aimed at curbing noise pollution and sending a stern warning to offenders.

Special Drive Against Noise Nuisance

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Patil of the Pimpri Chinchwad police detailed the initiative. The traffic branch executed a special drive specifically targeting riders who had equipped their motorcycles with modified exhaust systems. These devices, which replace factory-fitted silencers, are notorious for generating excessively loud noises, particularly when ridden through residential neighborhoods.

"During the special drive, we confiscated 368 modified exhausts," stated DCP Patil, highlighting the scale of the seizure. The police action came in response to numerous complaints from residents distressed by the disruptive noise caused by these alterations.

Rising Enforcement and Penalties

The crackdown is part of a broader enforcement effort. Between January and February 26 this year, the Pimpri Chinchwad traffic police have registered cases against 1,853 motorcycle riders and issued challans totaling Rs 18.53 lakh for various violations, including the use of modified exhausts.

This marks a significant escalation from the previous year. In 2023, the police took action against 14,512 motorcyclists, imposing fines worth Rs 1.44 crore. The destruction of the 399 seized exhausts on Thursday underscores the authorities' commitment to continuing this rigorous campaign.

"On Thursday, we destroyed 399 seized exhausts. We will continue our action against such drivers," affirmed DCP Patil, signaling that the police intend to maintain pressure on violators to ensure quieter, safer streets for the community.
