Meerut: A suspected robber carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district on Friday morning. Police said that a head constable also sustained injuries during the exchange of fire.
According to police, a team from Hapur Nagar police station was conducting a vehicle-checking drive on Bulandshahr Road when they spotted a suspicious motorcyclist. The suspect attempted to allegedly flee after noticing the cops and was chased before being cornered near Godi village. Police said the accused opened fire on the team, prompting retaliatory firing.
The suspect, identified as Shyam Kumar, a resident of Surajpur village under Patwai police station limits in Rampur district, sustained bullet injuries and was taken to a community health centre, where doctors declared him dead. Head constable Manoj Kumar was injured. Police recovered an illegal pistol, spent cartridges, live ammunition and a motorcycle from the spot.
“Shyam was wanted in several criminal cases, including dacoity, robbery and Gangster Act registered against him across multiple districts, including Moradabad. He was also wanted in connection with a robbery case registered at Hapur Dehat police station on June 1,” said SP (Hapur) Kunwar Gyananjay Singh.
Armed robbers allegedly held the family hostage at Hapur businessman Narendra Agarwal and decamped with around 1.25 kg of gold jewellery, silver ornaments and cash worth nearly Rs 2 crore.
