In a significant blow to narcotics trafficking in Assam, security forces have confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of nearly Rs 8 crore in a series of coordinated operations across the Barak Valley. Police announced on Monday that five alleged drug peddlers were arrested in connection with the seizures.
Major Yaba Haul Near Sribhumi
The first breakthrough came on Sunday night. Acting on vigilance, personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Sribhumi police intercepted a man walking along the Poamara bypass road near Sribhumi town. The suspect was identified as Alam Uddin, a resident of Mubarakpur.
A search of the black bag he was carrying led to a major discovery. Officers recovered 6.33 kilograms of yaba tablets, cleverly concealed inside 25 soap cases. Police estimated the haul contained approximately 50,000 yaba tablets, with an illicit market value exceeding Rs 5 crore.
Following his arrest and interrogation at the Sribhumi Sadar Police Station, Alam Uddin was produced before a district court.
Cachar Police Strikes on Two Fronts
Simultaneously, based on specific intelligence inputs, Cachar police launched two separate anti-narcotics drives in the district on the same night.
In the first operation conducted along the Silchar bypass under Silchar Police Station limits, officials successfully recovered 152.98 grams of brown sugar (heroin). Two individuals, Sidique Rehman Laskar and Abdul Nur Laskar, both residents of Cachar, were taken into custody. The vehicle used for transporting the contraband was also seized.
A second raid was carried out at Kazidahar, falling under Sonai Police Station jurisdiction. Here, police confiscated 33 soap cases containing 366 grams of brown sugar. Two alleged peddlers, identified as Riazul Haque Laskar and Aklak Uddin Laskar from Sonai in Cachar, were arrested.
Investigations Aim to Unravel Network
Briefing the media in Silchar on Monday, Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar Paul confirmed that two separate cases under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have been registered in connection with the Cachar seizures.
The total value of the brown sugar recovered in the Cachar operations alone is estimated to be around Rs 2.75 crore in the black market. Paul emphasized that further investigation is actively underway. The probe aims to trace the supply chain and uncover possible links to larger, organised drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
The combined efforts of the BSF and district police have led to one of the most substantial drug busts in the Barak Valley recently, highlighting a continued crackdown on the narcotics trade.
