At least 56 people have been killed as unseasonal rain, thunderstorms, and lightning battered Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, officials confirmed. The severe weather caused widespread damage across several districts, with lightning strikes and collapsing structures contributing to the majority of casualties.
Chief Minister's Response
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognisance of the loss of lives and property damage. He directed district magistrates and senior officials to ensure that relief and compensation reach the affected families within 24 hours. The state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
Weather Impact
The unseasonal weather system brought heavy downpours and gusty winds, uprooting trees and damaging homes in many parts of the state. Power supply was disrupted in several areas, and road traffic was affected due to fallen debris. The India Meteorological Department has warned of more thunderstorms in the coming days.
Officials have been instructed to conduct a detailed survey of the damage and ensure prompt distribution of relief materials, including food, tarpaulins, and medical aid, to those affected. The state disaster response force has been deployed for rescue and relief operations.
