Church Leader Calls for Shift in Kerala's Liquor Revenue Strategy

In a significant development, the head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, has strongly urged the Kerala state government to explore alternative revenue sources instead of relying heavily on income from liquor sales. The Catholicos made these remarks during a crucial meeting held at the Church's headquarters in Kottayam on Saturday.

Meeting with Clergy and Officials

The meeting was attended by members of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) Temperance Commission, including clergy and state officials, who visited the Catholicos to discuss the government's controversial liquor policy. This gathering highlighted growing concerns among religious leaders about the societal impacts of the state's approach to alcohol regulation.

Criticism of Government Policy

Baselios Marthoma Mathews III expressed deep concern over the government's alcohol policy, stating that it poses a significant threat to society. "Not only Christians but people of all religions should raise their voices against it," he emphasized. The Catholicos argued that increased availability of alcohol directly leads to more violence and injustice within communities.

He specifically criticized the government's use of revenue from alcohol, which amounts to an additional Rs 1850 crore, for what he described as "unnecessary gatherings to boost their image." According to him, this is not an appropriate way to generate government revenue. Furthermore, he alleged that to prevent officials from questioning this approach, the government is increasing their work allowances, which raises ethical concerns.

Specific Policy Concerns

The extension of bar operating hours was highlighted as a particular area of worry. Church leaders view this move with considerable apprehension, believing it exacerbates alcohol-related problems. During the meeting, they decided to take concrete actions to address these issues.

Planned Actions and Petitions

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to submit a formal petition to the government. This petition will demand a revision of several policies, including:

  • The extension of bar hours
  • The increase in the number of liquor outlets
  • The opening of Bevco outlets at Metro stations

In addition to the petition, letters will be sent to various political fronts, urging them to take a clear stand on alcohol and drug policies. The Church aims to mobilize broader political support for stricter regulations.

Building a Coalition

Recognizing the need for a united front, the meeting also decided to organize a leadership meeting to bring together like-minded communities. This initiative seeks to foster collaboration among different groups concerned about the societal effects of alcohol policies, amplifying their collective voice.

The Catholicos's statements underscore a growing movement within Kerala's religious communities to challenge the state's dependence on liquor revenue and advocate for policies that prioritize public health and social welfare over financial gains.
