The Congress party is likely to announce its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Kerala assembly elections tomorrow, with senior leader KC Venugopal leading the race. According to party sources, the decision is expected after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Tuesday.
Venugopal Emerges as Frontrunner
KC Venugopal, the Congress general secretary and a prominent leader from Kerala, has emerged as the strongest contender for the chief ministerial post. His extensive experience in state and national politics, coupled with his organizational skills, makes him a preferred choice among party leaders. Other potential candidates include former state minister Ramesh Chennithala and KPCC president K Sudhakaran, but Venugopal is believed to have an edge.
Party's Strategy for 2026 Elections
The Congress party is aiming to wrest power from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the 2026 assembly elections. By announcing the CM candidate well in advance, the party hopes to consolidate its cadre and project a clear leadership face to the voters. The decision also comes in the wake of internal consultations and feedback from district-level party units.
Venugopal's candidacy is expected to appeal to a broad section of voters, including traditional Congress supporters and those disillusioned with the LDF government. His role in coordinating the party's national affairs has also bolstered his profile within the organization.
Internal Discussions and Consensus
Party sources indicate that the high command has been in touch with various stakeholders in Kerala to build a consensus. While there is no official confirmation, the announcement is likely to be made by AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, or by the party president. The CWC meeting tomorrow is expected to formalize the decision.
Meanwhile, the ruling LDF is yet to announce its chief ministerial candidate, with incumbent CM Pinarayi Vijayan expected to be the face once again. The BJP, which has been trying to expand its footprint in Kerala, is also yet to name its candidate.
The announcement will set the stage for a high-voltage electoral battle in Kerala, where the Congress-led UDF is looking to regain power after a decade in opposition.
