Union Minister George Kurian on Saturday asserted that elected representatives must ensure their work is effectively communicated to the public, stressing that true recognition stems from people's understanding and acceptance of their efforts. He was speaking after inaugurating the development seminar for the fifth annual plan under the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Thiruvananthapuram corporation.

While acknowledging that social media and mainstream media provide platforms for public representatives to highlight their activities, Kurian emphasized that it is essential for developmental initiatives to genuinely reach and convince the people. "When people truly comprehend the work being done for them, their word-of-mouth appreciation becomes the greatest recognition for any public representative," he stated, underscoring the importance of transparent and accessible governance.
Key Development Opportunities for Kerala
The Union minister also highlighted several significant opportunities announced by the Central government that could benefit Kerala, with a particular focus on Thiruvananthapuram. He revealed that one of the three newly announced National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) is expected to be allotted to Kerala, with hopes that it will be established in the state capital. This move could bolster the region's pharmaceutical and educational sectors.
Additionally, Kurian pointed out that among the five university townships announced by the Centre, Thiruvananthapuram should stake a strong claim for one. This is especially pertinent given the growing strategic and economic importance of the Vizhinjam port, which enhances the city's potential as an educational and economic hub.
City Economic Region Scheme and Strategic Initiatives
In further developments, Kurian referred to the City Economic Region scheme introduced for Tier-II and Tier-III cities. Under this initiative, Rs 5,000 crore will be allocated to each selected city over a five-year period. Mayor V V Rajesh, who presided over the function, echoed these sentiments by stating that Thiruvananthapuram has all the potential to emerge as the economic capital of South India.
