Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a five-nation tour tomorrow aimed at strengthening India’s relations with the UAE and four European countries — the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy. The visit will focus on expanding cooperation in areas such as energy, defence, technology, trade and investment.

According to MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George, Mr Modi will first visit the UAE, where he will meet President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Discussions are expected to cover bilateral ties, regional issues, energy security, technology and cultural links. India and the UAE share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with over 4.5 million Indians living in the Gulf nation.

Kolkata Fire: Station Officer Suspended

The Director General of West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services has suspended Pragati Maidan Fire Station officer Goutam Das following a major blaze in Tiljala that killed two people. The fire broke out on 12 May at an illegal leather factory on Golam Jilani Khan Road, exposing serious safety and oversight failures. A joint inspection found the building lacked approved plans, fire safety systems and a sanctioned electricity connection.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has since begun demolishing the structure. Commissioner Smita Pandey said authorities would follow due process while taking necessary action against violations. Minister Agnimitra Paul also announced a wider crackdown on illegal buildings across the state. Meanwhile, residents affected by the demolition appealed for time to recover documents and prove ownership legality.

Denise Powell Wins Democratic Primary in Nebraska

Denise Powell has won the Democratic primary in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, a closely watched battleground known for its “blue dot” role in US presidential elections. The Omaha-area seat is a key Democratic target following the retirement of Republican Congressman Don Bacon. Powell, a political activist, narrowly defeated state senator John Cavanaugh and several other candidates in a race that remained too close to call on Tuesday night. She will now face Brinker Harding, who was endorsed by Donald Trump and ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
