Ricky Andrew J Syngkon, aged 54, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening at a hospital in Shillong. He suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing futsal in Mawlai Mawiong. A founding member of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), Syngkon was a rising star in Meghalaya's political arena. Prior to his political career, he served as an assistant professor in the department of economics at North-Eastern Hill University, showcasing his academic prowess and dedication to education.

In the 2024 general elections, Syngkon achieved a remarkable victory by winning the prestigious Shillong parliamentary seat as a VPP candidate. He defeated three-time Congress MP Vincent H Pala by an impressive margin of 3,71,910 votes, demonstrating his widespread popularity and the trust placed in him by the electorate.

Final Journey and Condolences

On Friday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited Syngkon's residence in the Pohkseh locality of Shillong to pay homage and offer condolences to the bereaved family. Following this, Syngkon's body was transported to his native village, Nongsder in Ri-Bhoi district, where it lay in state before the funeral. The procession and burial were marked by an outpouring of grief from the local community, reflecting the deep connection Syngkon maintained with his roots.

His untimely demise has left a void in Meghalaya's political landscape, with many remembering him as a dedicated leader who championed the causes of the people. The events surrounding his funeral highlight the respect and admiration he garnered across the state.
