Rebel Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Nagesh Patil Ashtikar has officially confirmed his crossover to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Speaking in Nanded, he said he was not upset with Uddhav Thackeray but felt compelled to leave after repeated criticism and distrust from some party leaders. He also cited the need to remain in power to effectively serve his constituents.
Ashtikar’s Statement and Reasons for Leaving
In a public address in Nanded, Ashtikar clarified that his decision was not directed against Uddhav Thackeray personally. However, he expressed that constant criticism and a lack of trust from certain party leaders made it untenable for him to continue. He emphasized that being in power is essential to deliver for his constituency, which influenced his move to the Shinde faction.
Impact on Maharashtra Politics
Ashtikar’s defection marks another shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape, where the Shiv Sena remains divided between the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction and the Eknath Shinde-led group. The move weakens the UBT faction’s numerical strength in Parliament and strengthens the Shinde camp ahead of upcoming elections.
Reactions from Political Circles
Political analysts note that Ashtikar’s departure could trigger further defections from the UBT faction. Supporters of the Shinde faction have welcomed the move, while UBT leaders have downplayed its significance, stating that the party remains united. Ashtikar’s switch underscores the ongoing realignments in Maharashtra politics, where power and governance considerations often override party loyalty.
