Thane Civic Meeting Adjourned in Tribute to Ajit Pawar
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) convened its first General Body meeting in nearly four years on Friday, a significant event marking the formal assembly of newly elected representatives after a prolonged period of administrative rule. However, proceedings were abruptly adjourned shortly after commencement as a mark of respect following the death of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, casting a somber tone over the long-awaited session.
Condolence Motion and Emotional Tributes
The meeting opened with a condolence motion, where members from across party lines paid heartfelt tributes to Pawar, highlighting his pivotal contributions to Maharashtra's development and his deep ties to Thane's growth. A two-minute silence was observed, after which the House was adjourned for the day, with all agenda items postponed to a later date. This adjournment underscored the profound impact of Pawar's passing on the political landscape.
NCP group leader Najib Mulla grew visibly emotional during his speech, recalling his personal association with the late deputy chief minister. He shared anecdotes from their final meeting, praised Pawar's mentorship, and noted his well-known discipline of beginning work early each morning. Shiv Sena group leader Pawan Kadam described the news as deeply saddening, while BJP group leader Mukesh Mokashi extended condolences and emphasized Pawar's exceptional administrative capabilities.
Calls for Inquiry and Political Reflections
NCP (SP) leader Ashraf Shanu Pathan called on the mayor to send a formal representation to the state government, urging a thorough inquiry into the circumstances of the accident and fixing accountability where warranted. Corporators from AIMIM echoed this demand for a detailed probe and offered support to Pawar's family, reflecting a unified stance across party lines. Shinde faction corporators Vikas Repale and Ram Repale also shared their experiences of working alongside Pawar during elections, adding personal insights into his political legacy.
Following tributes from several senior members, the House was adjourned, with all scheduled agenda items deferred. This meeting, though brief, highlighted the respect and admiration Pawar commanded, even as it delayed critical civic business in Thane.
