Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Holds Key Meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil
In a significant development for Uttarakhand's infrastructure and environmental initiatives, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil in New Delhi for a courtesy meeting. The discussions centered on critical preparations for the upcoming Mahakumbh, scheduled to be held in Haridwar in 2027, alongside various projects under the Namami Gange programme.
Funding Request for National Mission for Clean Ganga Projects
According to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), CM Dhami formally requested early approval for projects worth Rs 408.82 crore under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). This funding is deemed essential to ensure the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 is organized successfully, managed efficiently, and conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner.
CM Dhami emphasized that the mega event, which will run from January to April 2027, is expected to attract millions of devotees from across India and abroad. Consequently, maintaining the cleanliness, purity, and uninterrupted flow of the Ganga River has been identified as a top priority for the state government.
Additional Proposals for Flood Protection and Irrigation
Beyond the NMCG projects, the Chief Minister also sought approval for several other key initiatives. These include proposals worth Rs 253 crore for flood protection works, the release of additional funds under the Jal Jeevan Mission, and the expansion of critical canal systems such as the Iqbalpur, Kankhal, and Jagjitpur canals.
CM Dhami highlighted that these measures would make 665 cusecs of water available for irrigating previously unirrigated land, specifically benefiting the Bhagwanpur and Laksar areas of Haridwar district. The project is projected to provide irrigation facilities to approximately 13,000 hectares of land and help address drinking water issues in the region, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and local water security.
Commitment to a Grand and Historic Kumbh Mela
The Chief Minister reiterated that, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with the support of the Central Government, the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 will be transformed into a grand, divine, and historic event. This vision aligns with broader goals of Ganga conservation, reinforcing the state's commitment to environmental stewardship alongside cultural and religious festivities.
In a related announcement, CM Dhami expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government for releasing Rs 500 crore specifically for the preparations of the Kumbh Mela 2027 in Haridwar. He stated that these funds will significantly boost infrastructure, sanitation, security, and pilgrim facilities, ensuring the event is both grand and well-managed, as per the official release.
This meeting underscores the collaborative efforts between the state and central governments to enhance Uttarakhand's developmental and environmental projects, setting a robust foundation for the upcoming Mahakumbh while advancing sustainable water management practices.
