In a tragic series of events, Maharashtra reported 18 fatalities within 24 hours due to multiple road accidents across the state. The incidents, which occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, have raised serious concerns about road safety and enforcement of traffic regulations.
Major Accidents Reported
The deadliest incident took place in Nashik district, where a private bus collided head-on with a truck on the Mumbai-Agra highway. The collision claimed 10 lives and left several others injured. Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus was speeding and the driver lost control while overtaking.
In another accident in Pune district, a speeding car rammed into a stationary truck, killing four people on the spot. The car was reportedly carrying six passengers, all of whom were critically injured. Two more victims succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital.
Other Fatal Incidents
In Thane, a two-wheeler was hit by a state transport bus, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old man. The bus driver has been arrested for reckless driving. Meanwhile, in Nagpur, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle. The driver fled the scene.
Three more deaths were reported from separate accidents in Aurangabad, Kolhapur, and Solapur, where vehicles overturned due to overspeeding and poor road conditions.
Government Response
Maharashtra's Transport Minister expressed deep sorrow over the incidents and assured that the government would take strict action against those responsible. He announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured.
Police have registered cases against the drivers involved in the accidents and are investigating the causes. Officials have also emphasized the need for better road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragedies.
Road safety experts have called for immediate measures, including installation of speed cameras, better lighting on highways, and regular vehicle inspections. They also urged drivers to follow traffic rules and avoid overspeeding.
