AMC Fines Rs 5.1 Lakh, Destroys 2,089 Kg Unhygienic Food

Ahmedabad: Intensifying its crackdown on food adulteration and hygiene violations, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) health department collected fines worth more than Rs 5.1 lakh and destroyed 2,089 kg of unhygienic food during a fortnight-long drive ending June 15.

According to AMC officials, 409 food samples collected from across the city were tested at the civic body’s laboratory. Of these, 27 samples failed quality checks. One sample of kalakhatta syrup was found to be unsafe for consumption, prompting the civic body to initiate criminal court proceedings against the offender. The remaining 26 samples were classified as substandard.

Wide Range of Food Items Tested

The food items tested covered a wide range of commonly consumed products. The samples included 88 dairy products such as paneer, processed cheese and ghee; 54 spice samples including cloves and black pepper powder; 45 namkeen items; 28 juice samples comprising sugarcane juice, mango milkshakes and watermelon juice; 18 sweet products; 18 grain-based items such as besan and flour; 16 cold beverages including lassi, ice cream and sherbet; 12 edible oil samples; 11 bakery products; and 119 other food items.

Zone-wise Analysis of Failed Samples

Zone-wise analysis showed the West Zone recorded the highest number of failed samples, accounting for 10 cases. These included mango milkshakes, processed cheese, vegetable sauce and kiwi juice. The North Zone reported seven failed samples involving manchurian, tutti frutti and flavoured drinks.

The South Zone registered four failed samples, including the unsafe kalakhatta syrup as well as butter and ragda. The Central Zone accounted for three failures involving mango milkshakes, cloves and black pepper powder.

The North West Zone recorded two failed samples of ghee, while the East Zone reported one failed sample of sweet chutney.
