Mumbai police on Thursday questioned a 14-year-old boy and subsequently released him to his family following an alleged altercation outside a building in Cuffe Parade. The incident occurred after the boy was reportedly denied drinking water by a security guard.
Incident Details
A police constable on patrol duty in the early hours of Thursday was approached by Suraj Chaudhary (21), a security guard of the building, who reported that a boy was causing trouble and had been detained. The constable then took both the boy and Chaudhary to the police station for further inquiry.
During questioning, it emerged that the boy, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Cuffe Parade, was returning home with friends around 2am. He asked the building's guard for water, but the guard refused, leading to a verbal argument. The boy sustained a head injury during the altercation.
Outcome of the Case
Given that the boy is an orphan and required medical attention, the police admonished him and handed him over to his 65-year-old grandmother. No First Information Report (FIR) or non-cognisable complaint was registered. A search for the other boys who were with the minor did not yield any results.
Dr Laura Dsouza, president of the Cuffe Parade Residents Association, noted that private housing societies in the area had allowed slum residents to use their common taps for water during the pandemic as a gesture of goodwill. She alleged that the boys began throwing stones after being denied entry.
