In a dramatic political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) executed a surprising maneuver on Friday by establishing a post-election alliance with Shiv Sena for the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation. This strategic partnership was announced on the final day for filing nominations for the mayoral positions, setting the stage for the upcoming elections scheduled for February 10.
Key Nominations and Alliance Details
The BJP has officially declared Sameer Rajurkar as its candidate for the mayor's office, while extending the deputy mayor's position to Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena district chief and former deputy mayor, Rajendra Janjal, has been named as the deputy mayoral candidate. This alliance materialized despite previous rounds of pre-poll negotiations between the two parties proving entirely fruitless.
Notably, guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat was conspicuously absent from Janjal's retinue during the nomination filing process, highlighting internal dynamics within Shiv Sena.

Both BJP and Shiv Sena contested the civic elections independently, with significant disagreements preventing any pre-poll understanding. The BJP emerged as the single largest party, securing 57 out of the 115 seats—just one seat short of a clear majority. Uncertainty had persisted for several days regarding the BJP's mayoral nominee. Following a crucial meeting chaired by state BJP president Ravindra Chavan, four potential names were reportedly forwarded to the party's senior leadership. The prolonged delay unsettled many corporators before Rajurkar's name was finally cleared on Friday morning. He proceeded to file his nomination in the afternoon, accompanied by senior leaders from both BJP and Shiv Sena.
Internal Rifts and Strategic Calculations
The decision to offer the deputy mayor's post to Shiv Sena was significantly influenced by internal fractures within the party. Reports indicate that differences emerged between Shirsat and Janjal over mayoral aspirations, which weakened Shiv Sena's cohesion, especially after the party was reduced to just 13 corporators. As talks stalled, Shirsat withdrew from the negotiations entirely.
Subsequently, MLA Pradeep Jaiswal proposed Janjal's name for the deputy mayor position, which received endorsement from the party observer, facilitating the alliance with BJP.

Adding to the electoral contest, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has also entered the fray, fielding Ashok Hiwrale for the mayor's post and Mohammed Wasim Ahmed for deputy mayor.
