Congress MLA Pargat Singh Demands Resignations Over Jalandhar Political Killing
Former education minister and Congress MLA Pargat Singh launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab on Thursday, following the brutal killing of AAP youth leader Lucky Oberoi in Jalandhar. Singh described the incident as a clear indicator of the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation across the state.
Demands for Accountability and Judicial Inquiry
In a strongly worded statement, Pargat Singh demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the portfolio of Home Minister, and Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav. He called for a Supreme Court-monitored judicial inquiry into the murder of Lucky Oberoi, as well as other recent political assassinations that have shaken Punjab.
The Congress leader further urged the deployment of central security forces to restore public order and demanded a public apology from AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal for what he termed the government's failure to protect its own members and citizens.
Pattern of Political Violence in Punjab
Singh emphasized that the daylight killing of Oberoi was not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern of escalating political violence in Punjab. He pointed to multiple murders of leaders from various political parties over recent years, questioning the AAP government's effectiveness in handling this dangerous trend.
"If members of the ruling party themselves are not safe from such attacks, how can ordinary citizens feel secure?" Singh questioned, highlighting what he described as growing public vulnerability under the current administration.
Criticism of Law Enforcement and Campaign Promises
The former minister launched a direct criticism against the Punjab Police, alleging systematic misuse of the force for political purposes rather than maintaining public safety. He specifically questioned the government's much-publicized "Gangsteran Te Vaar" (War Against Gangsters) campaign, stating that ground realities completely contradicted the bold claims made during election campaigns.
Singh accused the AAP government of failing to deliver on its electoral promises regarding safety and governance, noting that drug-related problems continue to plague the state while incidents of violence undermine public confidence in institutions.
Warning of Central Intervention
The Congress MLA issued a stern warning that if the government fails to take immediate, concrete steps—including swift arrests and an impartial investigation into Oberoi's killing and other recent violent incidents—the demand for central government intervention could gain significant momentum among the public and political circles.
Singh's comprehensive critique represents mounting political pressure on the AAP administration to address what opposition parties characterize as a breakdown in law enforcement mechanisms and a failure to protect citizens from organized violence.
