Manipur's ISBT to Open in 10 Days, City Buses Soon to Ease Imphal Traffic
Imphal's ISBT Fully Operational in 10 Days, City Buses Announced

In a significant move to address chronic traffic issues and revitalise public mobility, the Manipur government has set a firm deadline to make the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Imphal fully functional. Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) Anurag Bajpai announced that the terminal will be operational within the next ten days.

Reviving Imphal's Public Transport Infrastructure

Speaking at a media sensitisation programme during the National Road Safety Month 2026, Bajpai revealed that repair work at the ISBT is now in its final phase. The long-awaited reopening of this key transit hub is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the state capital by providing a centralised and organised point for interstate bus operations.

Alongside the ISBT revival, Bajpai confirmed the imminent launch of city bus services for Imphal. This initiative is a core part of the government's strategy to strengthen public transport infrastructure and reduce the public's reliance on private vehicles, which contribute heavily to urban traffic snarls.

Road Safety: A Critical Social Imperative

Bajpai used the platform to issue a stark reminder about road safety, emphasising it must evolve into a sustained social movement. He stressed the urgent need to build awareness from the school level itself, aiming to instil a fundamental respect for traffic rules and the sanctity of human life.

The call for action is backed by alarming statistics. Manipur has recorded between 2,000 to 3,000 road accidents, resulting in more than 830 fatalities. These figures underscore the critical need for systemic improvements in both transport infrastructure and public behaviour on the roads.

Broader Impact and Public Interest

The combined impact of a functional ISBT and new city bus services is projected to serve the larger public interest in multiple ways:

  • Reduced Congestion: Streamlining interstate bus operations away from key city roads.
  • Improved Urban Mobility: Providing a reliable and affordable alternative to private transport within Imphal.
  • Enhanced Safety: As part of a holistic approach that includes infrastructure and awareness to lower accident rates.

The announcements mark a concrete step by the state transport department to tackle long-standing issues of connectivity, convenience, and safety for the people of Manipur.
