JD(U) Announces Bid for Mango Mayoral Seat in Jamshedpur, Seeks BJP Support

In a significant political development in Jamshedpur, the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) declared on Sunday its intention to contest the mayoral post of the Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC). The party asserted that its leader has proactively initiated discussions to persuade its senior alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to back its candidate for this crucial position.

MLA Saryu Roy Leads Negotiations with BJP Leadership

Saryu Roy, the JD(U) MLA representing Jamshedpur (West), revealed that he has commenced talks with leaders of the alliance partner to advocate for the JD(U) contesting the mayoral seat as a joint candidate of the two parties. Roy emphasized that he has communicated the sentiments of JD(U) party leaders to BJP president Aditya Sahu, indicating that the matter will be thoroughly deliberated in subsequent discussions with the BJP state leadership.

Roy confidently stated, "JD(U) possesses more than a strong candidate for the Mango mayoral seat. Additionally, the party boasts a robust social base and organizational strength within the Mango municipality." He further highlighted that if JD(U) contests the mayoral polls as an NDA candidate, the prospects of securing victory are highly promising.

Internal Discussions and BJP's Response

Earlier on Sunday, JD(U) district party leaders convened with MLA Saryu Roy at his residence in Bistupur, formally staking claim to the mayoral post. In response to JD(U)'s proposal, Anil Modi, the general secretary of BJP's Jamshedpur Mahanagar Samiti, remarked, "This is an internal matter of the alliance partner. Should any such proposal reach the state party leadership, the high command will make the final decision."

Meanwhile, a former district president of the BJP noted that the party has maintained a strong presence in large pockets of Mango for over two decades, underscoring the competitive dynamics at play.

Background on Mango Municipal Corporation

The Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC), established in 1975, was upgraded to a municipal corporation in 2017. The upcoming polls scheduled for February 23 will mark the first election for the 36 wards along with the mayoral and deputy mayoral posts, making this a historic event for the region.

As political maneuvering intensifies, all eyes are on the alliance dynamics between JD(U) and BJP, with the outcome potentially shaping the future governance of Mango Municipal Corporation in Jamshedpur.
