The upcoming Kolhapur Municipal Corporation elections present a mixed picture of candidate backgrounds. Political parties have largely avoided nominating individuals with direct criminal records. Yet, relatives of known local criminals continue to contest in several of the 20 wards, which together elect 81 councillors.
Criminal Allegations Among Candidates
Despite the general avoidance of candidates with criminal histories, a significant number still face serious charges. Official profiles reveal that 29 candidates currently have criminal cases registered against them. These cases span five different police stations within Kolhapur city.
The allegations are severe and varied. They include charges of murder, attempted murder, rioting, and cheating. This indicates that while parties exercise some caution, individuals with pending legal issues remain part of the electoral process in certain areas.
Educational Qualifications of Aspirants
The educational background of the 327 candidates shows considerable diversity. A solid 151 candidates, representing 45% of the total, have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate examination. This is equivalent to completing the 12th standard board exams.
Many others have studied only up to the secondary school level. Notably, very few candidates in the fray hold graduate degrees. Among those who do, the professional fields are distinct.
Graduates and Professionals in the Race
The small pool of graduates includes three medical doctors, six engineers, and five law graduates. Several candidates also hold Bachelor of Commerce degrees. A number of them have completed Bachelor of Education programs, which qualifies them for teaching.
One candidate stands out with a PhD, making them the most highly educated contender. In stark contrast, the least-qualified candidate has only passed the third standard. This vast gap highlights the wide range of backgrounds from which civic representatives emerge.
Age Profile of the Contestants
The age distribution of candidates is another key aspect. Approximately 130 candidates are below 40 years old, bringing a relatively younger perspective to the polls. The largest group consists of 172 candidates who fall within the 41 to 60 years age bracket.
This demographic spread suggests a blend of experience and potential new energy entering the municipal governance arena. Voters in Kolhapur now have detailed profiles to consider as they prepare to choose their local representatives.
