Olypub Waiter Sheikh Nasimuddin Pledges Loyalty to Kolkata After Wrong Meat Arrest
Sheikh Nasimuddin, the Olypub waiter who was arrested last week for serving the wrong type of meat to a social media influencer, has declared his unwavering commitment to Kolkata despite spending three nights in jail. Released on Tuesday, Nasimuddin spoke to TOI about his ordeal and future plans.
"A One-Off Incident Cannot Change Everything"
In an emotional statement, Nasimuddin said, "This city has given me a lot—due respect, a decent living and a bright future for my family. A one-off incident cannot change everything. I will continue to work here and love this city as I always have." A native of Odisha, he has lived in Kolkata for six years, working as a waiter at the popular Olypub restaurant.
Health Issues Delay Return to Work
Although legally free, Nasimuddin has not yet resumed his duties, citing poor health and mental exhaustion. "Sleeping on the floor for three nights left me with chest congestion," he explained. He has requested a few days' leave to recover, despite his family urging him to return home. "My family wants me to come back home, but I am not leaving Kolkata. I will rejoin work soon," he affirmed.
Details of the Incident and Arrest
Nasimuddin was booked under Section 299 of the BNS, which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings. He described the episode as a "genuine mistake" and said he immediately apologized to both the customer and the police. "I pleaded multiple times before the customer, but he was not ready to listen," he recalled. "He kept shooting the video and accusing me." Later, he received a call from Park Street police station and went there in his uniform, expecting to explain, but was arrested instead.
Social Media Backlash and Legal Repercussions
The incident sparked significant backlash on social media, with many criticizing influencer Sayak Chakraborty for filming the episode and pursuing police action against a service worker. This backlash led to formal complaints, resulting in at least four cases filed against Chakraborty and an FIR. While visiting Olypub briefly after his release, a visibly shaken Nasimuddin said the experience deeply affected him.
Support from Olypub Management
The management of Olypub stood firmly by Nasimuddin during this challenging time. Azmeen Tangri, director of Olypub, stated, "We are relieved that he is out of jail. He went through a lot in the last few days. He asked for some time to heal, and he is welcome to rejoin work whenever he feels ready." Nasimuddin expressed gratitude for this support, noting that the restaurant arranged legal assistance and ensured his job security. "They did not abandon me when I needed support the most," he said.
Lessons Learned and Future Caution
Reflecting on the incident, Nasimuddin said it made him more cautious and disciplined. "I learnt my lesson. From now on, I will double-check every order I receive," he added, emphasizing his commitment to improving his service.
This case highlights the tensions between social media influence and service workers' rights in urban India, with Kolkata at the center of the debate. Nasimuddin's resilience and the community's support underscore the city's complex social fabric.
