Nagpur's Iconic Futala Fountain Lake Project Set for Major Revival

In a significant development for Nagpur's urban landscape, the long-defunct Futala Fountain Lake project is finally poised for a comprehensive revival. The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) officially handed over the project to MahaMetro on Wednesday, clearing all administrative hurdles and setting the stage for extensive repair and restoration works at the site.

Technical Audit and Initial Repair Plans

The revival process gained momentum earlier this month when a French technical team, originally associated with the fountain's installation, conducted a detailed inspection of the defunct system. Their audit revealed extensive damage to the electrical cables, which had remained idle for over two years, leading to significant deterioration.

"Based on the French team's findings, the contractor has already placed orders for replacement cables," confirmed a senior MahaMetro official. "These cables are scheduled to be dispatched on February 12, and their replacement will be among the first major works undertaken once we gain full access to the site."

Comprehensive Pump System Assessment

Beyond cable replacement, MahaMetro has finalized plans to replace several pump-related components. While the main pump units remain structurally sound, multiple internal parts including nozzles, washers, and other mechanical components require replacement due to prolonged disuse.

The official explained that "a comprehensive technical assessment of the pumping system has been completed, and we have prepared a detailed list of components requiring replacement." Procurement of these pump components is currently awaiting final technical submissions from the contractor, after which replacement will proceed in a phased manner.

Structural Restoration and Additional Works

Another crucial element of the revival plan involves work on the steel 'banyan tree' structure, a prominent feature of the Futala redevelopment project. MahaMetro officials confirmed that preparatory planning for this component is already underway, with execution scheduled to begin alongside fountain system repairs.

In addition to these three primary focus areas—cables, pump components, and the steel structure—MahaMetro will undertake comprehensive restoration and maintenance works across the entire site. These include:

  • Cleaning and painting of existing structures
  • Grouting and surface repairs
  • General upkeep of surrounding infrastructure
  • Maintenance of parking facilities

These ancillary works will proceed parallel to the core technical repairs, ensuring a holistic restoration of the entire complex.

Background and Significance

The Futala Fountain Lake was originally projected as a landmark urban attraction for Nagpur but has remained non-operational since its inauguration due to recurring technical faults and maintenance challenges. The prolonged shutdown resulted in significant wear and tear of both electrical and mechanical systems, necessitating the current large-scale repair initiative.

With materials already in the procurement pipeline and work scheduled to commence shortly, Nagpur residents can finally look forward to seeing this iconic water feature restored to its former glory, potentially becoming a major tourist attraction and community space once again.
