With the campaigning for the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections in full swing, the city police have significantly ramped up security measures. The heightened vigilance aims to prevent any clashes or violence between contesting candidates and their supporters during this critical period.
Preventive Action Following Nomination Withdrawal
The police decision comes in the wake of the nomination withdrawal process that concluded on January 2. Following this, independent candidates and those from various political parties launched extensive campaigning in their respective wards. The withdrawal day itself witnessed several disputes, raising concerns among authorities about potential confrontations during the campaign trail.
Senior police officers pointed to instances of violence in previous elections during campaigning. To avoid a repeat, the force is taking all possible steps to ensure the electoral process remains peaceful. As a major preventive step, the police have externed 380 known anti-social elements from the city for a period of a fortnight, until January 16.
Patrolling Intensified Across Key Areas
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Mitke provided details of the security plan. He stated that acting on the guidance of Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik, patrolling has been intensified throughout Nashik. The police are on high alert across the entire city to monitor the situation closely.
However, certain pockets have been identified for even stricter vigilance. These areas include Cidco, Saptur, Panchavati, and Nashik Road. The increased focus here is due to the fact that a large number of candidates are contesting from single wards in these localities, which could heighten tensions and competition. The stepped-up security in these zones is a proactive measure to avert any untoward incidents.

The police's strategy is clearly focused on pre-emption rather than reaction. By removing potential troublemakers and increasing visible policing, especially in sensitive areas, the authorities aim to create a secure environment for democratic campaigning.
