Pune Police Uncover Suspicious Materials Before Civic Elections
Pune police made a significant seizure on Tuesday night, just ahead of the city's civic polls. Officers confiscated cash worth Rs 1 lakh, more than 300 empty envelopes, and a voters' list from two locked SUVs parked in the Khadimachine area of Yewalewadi.
Police Respond to Model Code Violation Report
At approximately 9 pm on Tuesday, the Yewalewadi Police Station received information about a possible violation of the model code of conduct. A police team immediately rushed to the Khadimachine area to investigate the report.
The police discovered two suspicious vehicles parked near Khadimachine Chowk. Both SUVs were locked when officers arrived at the scene. The Flying Squad Team, specially formed for the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, joined the investigation promptly.
Detailed Inspection Reveals Concerning Items
Upon thorough examination of both vehicles, investigators found disturbing evidence. In the first car, they discovered two bundles of Rs 500 currency notes totaling exactly Rs 1 lakh.
The second vehicle contained even more concerning materials:
- A comprehensive voters' list
- 255 white empty envelopes
- 80 khaki-colored empty envelopes
- 21 small notebooks
- 8 large notebooks
- Various other items
Official Investigation Launched
A senior Pune City police officer stated that the seized items strongly suggest the cash was intended for distribution to voters. This practice violates election regulations and undermines the democratic process.
The police have initiated a formal investigation to determine several crucial details:
- The original source of the confiscated cash
- The intended recipient or political party
- The purpose behind collecting the voters' list
- The planned use of the numerous empty envelopes
Officers completed a panchnama, which is the official seizure and inspection record. They have informed the returning officer about their findings and the ongoing investigation.
