Punjab Minister Balbir Singh Reviews Patiala Works, War on Drugs

Punjab's Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Balbir Singh, convened a high-level meeting with officials from multiple departments at the District Administrative Complex in Patiala on Monday. The session was aimed at reviewing the progress of various development projects underway in the district.

Nodal Officers Appointed for Timely Completion

In a significant move to ensure efficiency, Dr Balbir Singh announced the appointment of nodal officers for every department. This initiative, effective from the New Year, is designed to guarantee that government works are finished within the stipulated deadlines. The minister directed officials to provide clear timelines for critical urban development works, including road repairs, sanitation arrangements, and the development of traffic parks. The appointed nodal officers at the district level will be responsible for closely monitoring the progress of these tasks.

Phase Two of 'War Against Drugs' Launched

A major highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the second phase of the Punjab government's 'War Against Drugs' campaign. Dr Balbir Singh outlined a multi-pronged strategy to combat the menace. Strict action will be taken against drug peddlers, while the government will simultaneously focus on rehabilitation by providing employment opportunities to youth affected by drug abuse. In a proactive measure, the campaign will extend to schools, where tests for teachers and students will be conducted.

Focus on Urban Infrastructure and Environment

The minister outlined several key infrastructure and environmental plans for Patiala. Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) Chairperson Reena Gupta has been entrusted with the special responsibility of traffic management in the city. To decongest public spaces, officials were instructed to earmark separate zones for street vendors and e-rickshaws at the new bus stand.

Further plans include proper planning for the Badi Nadi and Chhoti Nadi water bodies, and the development of new parks to enhance the city's beauty. Concrete steps are being taken to find a permanent solution to the issue of flooding in Patiala city, the minister assured.

Dr Balbir Singh reiterated the government's commitment to realizing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's vision of a "Rangla Punjab" (Vibrant Punjab). He promised residents a clean city coupled with better health facilities. The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav, Additional Deputy Commissioners (ADCs), Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), municipal councillors, and officials from various departments.
