Tamil Nadu Sanitary Worker Receives Honors for Exemplary Honesty
In a heartening display of integrity, a municipal sanitary worker from Tiruvarur district in Tamil Nadu was publicly honored on Sunday for his remarkable honesty. The worker, identified as K Durai, aged 57, recovered a valuable bag containing precious ornaments and promptly handed it over to the authorities, leading to its safe return to the owner.
Discovery and Swift Action
K Durai discovered the bag near Viruppachi Nadappu Street in Tiruvarur. Upon inspection, he found it contained a significant amount of wealth: 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments and 750 grams of silver items. Without hesitation, Durai took the bag directly to the Tiruvarur town police station, ensuring it was placed in safe hands for investigation and recovery efforts.
Owner Identified and Property Returned
Police investigations quickly revealed that the bag belonged to Muthulakshmi, a resident of Chennai. She had been visiting her brother's family in Alivalam village near Thiruthuraipoondi. During her journey, Muthulakshmi made a brief stop at her maternal home on Viruppachi Nadappu Street in Tiruvarur. It was while traveling in an autorickshaw afterward that she accidentally dropped the bag.
After alighting from the vehicle, Muthulakshmi realized the bag was missing and immediately went to the same Tiruvarur town police station to file a complaint. Police verified her claims through proper procedures and, confirming her ownership, returned the bag with all its contents intact. This swift resolution prevented a significant financial loss for Muthulakshmi and highlighted the effectiveness of community-police cooperation.

In recognition of K Durai's outstanding integrity and selfless act, he was formally felicitated by the police department. Inspector A Santhanamary garlanded Durai in a ceremony at the police station, where station staff also honored him for setting a commendable example.
