UDF's Puthu Yuga Yatra Kicks Off in Kerala, Promising a New Political Dawn

The United Democratic Front (UDF) launched its ambitious statewide Puthu Yuga Yatra from Kumbala in Kasaragod district on Friday, marking a significant pre-election mobilization effort. Opposition leader V D Satheesan inaugurated the yatra, emphasizing that unlike conventional political rallies, this journey will present concrete, sector-wise alternatives to address the perceived failures of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.

A Yatra Focused on Solutions, Not Just Criticism

Satheesan declared that the yatra heralds a new era in Kerala's politics and governance. He asserted that while the UDF will critique the current administration, a substantial portion of the yatra—approximately 75% of the time—will be dedicated to discussing fundamental changes for Kerala's future. This includes detailed development plans formulated in consultation with experts, covering areas from job creation to systemic reforms in education and healthcare.

The opposition leader outlined a vision to transform Kerala into a global destination for health and education, attracting international interest. He confidently predicted that the UDF would secure over 100 seats in the upcoming assembly elections, underscoring the front's commitment to substantive policy discussions rather than mere rhetoric.

Addressing Kerala's Unprecedented Financial Crisis

Satheesan painted a grim picture of Kerala's current state, claiming the economy has crumbled under the LDF's watch. He described an unprecedented financial ruin, with spending far exceeding tax collection, leaving no funds for development or welfare activities. The opposition leader alleged that the LDF government has burdened Keralites with a staggering debt of nearly Rs 6 lakh crore, crippling the state's fiscal health.

The consequences of this crisis are dire, according to Satheesan. He warned that a disillusioned younger generation is emigrating from Kerala in huge numbers, and if this trend continues, the state risks becoming an "old age home" within five years. Additionally, he highlighted the ruin of the agricultural sector, a healthcare system on life support, and despair in coastal regions, urging immediate corrective measures.

Political Priorities and Communal Harmony

In his address, Satheesan made it clear that the UDF's priority will be to ensure communalism does not gain a foothold in Kerala. He accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of adopting the divisive tactics historically associated with the Sangh Parivar, alleging that both groups pursue agendas of political exploitation through polarization.

"We will not dilute our stand against communalism to win elections. There is no compromise. If anyone resorts to communalism during elections, we will question it," Satheesan stated firmly. He assured that the UDF would actively resist any communal forces, positioning itself as a bulwark for secular values in the state.

Inauguration and Key Attendees

The yatra was inaugurated by All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K C Venugopal, who set a strong tone for the campaign. He announced that the first action of a UDF government upon assuming power would be to ensure all accused in the high-profile Sabarimala gold heist case are imprisoned, signaling a focus on law and order.

The event saw the presence of prominent UDF leaders, including KPCC chief Sunny Joseph, AICC general secretary Deepa Das Munshi, and IUML national general secretary P K Kunhalikutty, showcasing unity within the opposition front. The yatra is scheduled to conclude in Thiruvananthapuram on March 7, traversing the state to engage with citizens and articulate the UDF's vision for a revitalized Kerala.
