SECR Implements AI-Powered Wagon Damage Detection System in Bhilai

In a significant advancement for railway safety and operational efficiency, the South East Central Railway (SECR) has commissioned an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based wagon damage detection system at the PP Yard in Bhilai. This innovative technology leverages machine learning algorithms to automatically identify physical damages in goods carriages, marking a transformative step in rail infrastructure maintenance.

How the AI Detection System Works

The system operates through a sophisticated setup that includes six high-definition machine vision cameras, specialized light sources, and a dedicated server room. As a rake enters the yard and passes through the scanning unit, these cameras capture detailed images of each wagon. The images are then processed on the server using AI algorithms to generate a comprehensive status report for every wagon number.

According to SECR officials, the technology is capable of detecting a wide range of defects, such as:

  • Missing or damaged doors
  • Residual consignment left in wagons
  • Lack of floor sheets
  • Missing body panels

By providing an accurate overview of potential damages before manual inspection begins, the system allows maintenance personnel to plan and execute repairs more efficiently, significantly reducing downtime.
