Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Startup InterPositive
In a strategic move to bolster its technological capabilities, Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence startup founded by Hollywood actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck. This acquisition follows Netflix's recent decision to step away from a potential deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, marking a shift in focus towards enhancing its in-house creative tools.
Details of the Acquisition
The streaming giant has brought InterPositive's entire 16-member team, comprising engineers, researchers, and creatives, into its fold. Ben Affleck will join Netflix as a senior adviser, providing ongoing guidance on the integration and development of AI technologies. However, the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed publicly.
This purchase comes just days after Netflix exited its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery studios and streaming businesses. The company opted not to submit a counteroffer after Paramount Skydance increased its hostile bid for Warner Bros. Discovery by $1 per share, raising the total offer to $31 per share.
InterPositive's AI Technology
InterPositive specializes in developing AI-powered tools designed to support filmmaking processes. According to Netflix, this technology is crafted to "keep filmmakers at the centre of the process," offering capabilities that enhance creative control rather than replacing human input. A report from Variety indicates that Netflix plans to provide its creative partners with access to these tools, with no current intention to sell the technology commercially.
Ben Affleck's Vision for AI in Filmmaking
In a video shared by Netflix alongside the acquisition announcement, Ben Affleck clarified that InterPositive's AI does not generate video from scratch. He emphasized, "It's not about text-prompting or generating something from nothing. AI, people mostly think of it as making something from nothing: 'I'm gonna type something into a computer and it's gonna give me a movie.' That's not what this is."
Instead, the system builds an AI model using existing production dailies, which filmmakers can then utilize in post-production for tasks such as mixing and coloring, relighting shots, and adding visual effects. Affleck founded the Los Angeles-based company in 2022 after observing the early stages of AI development in film production. He noted, "As a filmmaker, I could see how these models came up short. For artists to apply these tools towards telling the stories we dedicate our lives to, they need to be purpose-built to represent and protect all the qualities that make a great story."
Development and Applications
InterPositive built its first AI model using footage filmed on a controlled soundstage, training it to understand visual logic and editorial consistency while accounting for real-world production challenges like missing shots, background replacements, and incorrect lighting. Affleck added, "We also built in restraints to protect creative intent, so the tools are designed for responsible exploration while keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists."
Netflix's Strategic Goals
Netflix's chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, stated that the technology will give creative partners "more choices, more control and more protection for their vision." Meanwhile, Elizabeth Stone, Netflix's chief product and technology officer, highlighted that the tools are designed to help filmmakers produce higher-quality content, not to make films faster or cheaper. She affirmed, "The InterPositive team is joining Netflix because of our shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them."
This acquisition underscores Netflix's commitment to leveraging AI to enhance storytelling while maintaining artistic integrity, positioning the company at the forefront of technological innovation in the entertainment industry.
