NHAI Launches AI-Powered Surveillance for 40,000 km Highway Network

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is embarking on a transformative initiative to deploy an advanced artificial intelligence-powered monitoring system across approximately 40,000 kilometers of national highways. This strategic move is designed to revolutionize road management by making it more efficient, data-driven, and responsive to maintenance needs.

Dashcam Analytics Services: The Core Technology

At the heart of this ambitious project lies the Dashcam Analytics Services (DAS), a sophisticated system that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to continuously monitor road conditions. The implementation involves installing high-resolution dashboard cameras on specially designated Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs). These vehicles will conduct regular surveys along highway stretches, capturing uninterrupted video footage and images that are subsequently analyzed using AI-based models.

Comprehensive Defect Detection Capabilities

The authority has revealed that the system possesses the capability to automatically identify more than 30 distinct types of defects and anomalies. This encompasses common roadway issues such as:

  • Faulty crash barriers and streetlights

By significantly reducing dependence on manual inspections, this technology is anticipated to facilitate faster problem detection and enable more prompt maintenance interventions.

Expanded Monitoring Scope Beyond Pavement Quality

The AI-powered system extends its surveillance beyond mere pavement conditions to monitor a wide array of critical infrastructure elements and safety concerns. Key areas of focus include:

  1. Safety violations such as unauthorized median openings, illegal hoardings, roadside obstructions, and improper parking
  2. Maintenance issues like waterlogging, blocked drainage systems, excessive vegetation growth, and the condition of bus bays
  3. Night-time safety assessments through periodic surveys conducted after dark to evaluate the visibility and performance of road markings, reflectors, and lighting systems

NHAI has committed to conducting at least one night survey per month to ensure roads remain safe under low-light conditions.

Centralized Digital Platform and Zonal Implementation

The entire monitoring ecosystem will be supported by a centralized digital platform featuring dedicated modules for data management, AI analytics, and interactive dashboards. This platform will empower officials to:

  • Track road conditions in real-time
  • Compare historical data to identify trends
  • Monitor repair work progress more effectively

To ensure smoother implementation and quicker response times, NHAI has strategically divided the country into five distinct zones. This zonal approach will enhance monitoring efficiency and facilitate rapid action on issues flagged by the AI system.
