OpenAI's First Hardware Product: ChatGPT Earbuds With Revolutionary Design
OpenAI is making a bold move into hardware. The company's first physical product could be a pair of wireless earbuds powered by ChatGPT. This marks a significant step for the artificial intelligence giant.
Unique Design and Samsung Chip
The earbuds feature a unique, unseen before design. Known tipster Smart Pikachu shared this information on social media platform X. The product, codenamed Sweetpea, might include a main device shaped like an eggstone made of metal.
Inside these earbuds, OpenAI could use a custom Samsung chip. This 2nm smartphone style chip from Samsung's Exynos brand would power the audio-only product. OpenAI is customizing the chip to enable the device to replace iPhone actions by commanding Siri.
Collaboration With Jony Ive and Manufacturing Details
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is working with former Apple designer Jony Ive on this project. The hardware would be manufactured by Foxconn. Reports indicate Foxconn received instructions to prepare for five devices by the end of 2028.
The ChatGPT-powered earbuds are at the front line of Jony Ive's team according to many sources familiar with the matter. This screenless audio product represents a new direction for OpenAI.
Launch Timeline and Specifications
OpenAI plans to launch its first product sometime in September this year. The company projects sales volume between 40 million and 50 million units in the first year.
The egg-shaped case would house two removable pill-shaped devices with ceramic build. These would pack a Li-ion cell similar to other wireless earbuds. The bill of materials will be very high because components resemble those of a phone but offer more functionality.
Changing Rumors and Audio Focus
Earlier reports suggested OpenAI might launch a pen-style device that transcribes handwritten notes to ChatGPT. The new leak points toward earbuds that directly compete with Apple AirPods.
This development aligns with OpenAI's recent focus on improving audio-based AI models. While ChatGPT's audio capabilities are good, the large language model for text replies differs from the one powering voice models.
The upcoming product represents OpenAI's expansion beyond software into tangible hardware. This move could reshape how users interact with artificial intelligence in their daily lives.
