HAL Dismisses Reports of Major Damage to Tejas Jet, Labels It Minor Technical Incident
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has officially refuted media claims of significant damage to a Tejas light combat aircraft belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF). In a statement released on Monday, the state-owned aerospace company described the event as a "minor technical incident on ground", strongly denying any crash or major structural harm to the fighter jet.
HAL Provides Factual Clarification on Tejas Incident
The clarification from HAL comes in response to earlier reports that suggested a Tejas aircraft sustained substantial airframe damage after overshooting a runway at a frontline airbase on February 7, allegedly due to a suspected brake failure. According to those initial accounts, the pilot safely ejected from the aircraft.
In its detailed statement, HAL emphasized, "There has been no reported crash of the LCA Tejas. The event in question was a minor technical incident on ground." The company further assured that the Tejas maintains one of the world's best safety records among contemporary fighter aircraft, highlighting its commitment to rigorous safety protocols.
Standard Operating Procedures and IAF Collaboration
As part of standard operating procedures, HAL confirmed that the technical issue is being analyzed in depth. The company is working closely with the Indian Air Force to ensure a speedy resolution. This collaborative approach underscores the ongoing partnership between HAL and the IAF in maintaining and enhancing the operational readiness of the Tejas fleet.
Historical Context of Tejas Incidents and Procurement Deals
The Tejas program has experienced two previous incidents. The first occurred in March 2024, when a Tejas jet crashed near Jaisalmer. The second took place in November 2025, during an aerial display at the Dubai Airshow, resulting in another crash. Despite these events, HAL continues to promote the aircraft's safety and capabilities.
In terms of procurement, the Ministry of Defence signed a Rs 48,000 crore contract with HAL in February 2021 for the acquisition of 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets for the IAF. However, deliveries have faced delays, primarily attributed to GE Aerospace missing multiple deadlines for supplying the necessary aero engines.
More recently, in September of last year, the defence ministry finalized another significant deal worth Rs 62,370 crore with HAL to procure 97 additional Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft, further expanding the IAF's fleet.
Technical Specifications and Role of Tejas Aircraft
The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role fighter designed to operate effectively in high-threat environments. It is capable of performing a variety of missions, including air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and strike operations. Its versatility makes it a key asset for the Indian Air Force in modern aerial combat scenarios.
HAL's latest statement aims to reassure stakeholders and the public about the integrity and reliability of the Tejas program, emphasizing that minor technical issues are part of routine maintenance and do not reflect on the overall safety or performance of the aircraft.
