Noida International Airport Secures Final Regulatory Approval from DGCA
In a significant milestone for aviation infrastructure in the National Capital Region, Noida International Airport received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday. This approval marks the final regulatory clearance required before the airport can begin flight operations, following security clearance from the home ministry just a day earlier.
Inauguration and Operational Timeline
Sources indicate that the airport could be formally inaugurated as early as the last week of March, with commercial flight operations anticipated to commence around the second week of April. The aerodrome licence, issued under the Aircraft Rules of 1937, certifies that the airport meets stringent safety, operational, infrastructure, navigation, and emergency response standards set by India's civil aviation regulator.
RK Singh, CEO of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), confirmed that this clearance signifies the airport's readiness for takeoffs and landings. "We will seek time from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the airport," Singh stated, highlighting the project's national importance.
Safety and Security Preparations
On Thursday, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) granted security clearance, validating that critical security frameworks are in place. These include the Bomb Threat Contingency Plan, Anti-Hijack Contingency Plan, and Airport Security Programme, covering both passenger and cargo operations.
Calibration flights conducted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in November last year successfully tested the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI), ensuring navigation and communication systems adhere to international safety norms.
Infrastructure and Operational Readiness
Officials from Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), the Uttar Pradesh government's special purpose vehicle managing the project, reported that the airport has achieved full operational readiness. Key developments include:
- Completion of the passenger terminal's roofing, entry and exit points, internal systems, and security infrastructure.
- Readiness of the runway, air traffic control tower, and other airside facilities.
- Establishment of residential accommodations for staff within the airport complex by the concessionaire.
- Recruitment and training of operational personnel finalized.
- Cargo infrastructure prepared, with operations set to launch alongside domestic passenger flights.
Additionally, a 750-meter access road linking the terminal area directly to the Yamuna Expressway has been finished. Commercial and operational contracts for ground handling, aviation fuel services, in-flight catering, retail outlets, food and beverage services, cargo operations, and an airport hotel have all been awarded.
Airlines and Flight Plans
Three airlines—IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express—have confirmed plans to operate from the airport. Initial routes will connect Noida with major metropolitan cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, though the exact number of flights remains to be finalized.
Ticket bookings are expected to open approximately 30 days before flights begin, likely this month. Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Noida International Airport, emphasized a phased approach to operations, starting with limited daytime schedules before expanding to night operations. International services are projected to launch later in the year.
Long-Term Vision and Economic Impact
The airport is being developed in four phases. Phase one, featuring a single runway and terminal, will handle around 12 million passengers annually. Upon completion of all phases, capacity is expected to reach up to 70 million passengers per year, positioning it among India's largest aviation hubs.
Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu remarked that the airport will significantly enhance aviation connectivity for the NCR and western Uttar Pradesh. "This world-class airport will boost tourism, investment, and regional economic growth," he said. "It will also alleviate congestion at existing airports while providing passengers with a modern and seamless travel experience."
Shailendra Bhatia, nodal officer at NIAL, noted that the inauguration could coincide with Navratri in late March. "This approval confirms that the airport's infrastructure, safety procedures, and operational systems meet national aviation standards," Bhatia explained. "The first flights can begin within about 45 days, during which all stakeholders will be deployed."
