Nashik Launches Major Traffic Infrastructure Project for 2027 Kumbh Mela
The Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) has officially commenced a significant initiative to install 28 new traffic signals and 90 Variable Message Display (VMD) boards across the city. This ambitious project is strategically designed to bolster traffic management systems in anticipation of the massive influx of visitors expected for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
Public-Private Partnership Drives Rs 105 Crore Investment
Executed through a public-private partnership model, the project involves a private agency that will invest approximately Rs 105 crore. This agency will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the entire system for a duration of 15 years. According to officials, the VMD boards will be strategically placed at all existing and proposed traffic signal junctions throughout Nashik.
These digital boards are anticipated to play a crucial role during the Kumbh Mela by delivering real-time updates on traffic diversions, congestion levels, and other essential alerts for both local residents and pilgrims, an official emphasized.
Enhancing Traffic Flow and Infrastructure
Officials have stated that the primary objective of this project is to ensure smoother traffic movement during the 2027 event, which is expected to draw millions of visitors. Sumant More, CEO of the smart city corporation, provided detailed insights, noting that "twenty-eight new traffic signals and VMD boards at 90 locations will be established under this initiative."
He further explained that while the private agency will cover the full cost of the project, it will also be permitted to generate revenue through advertisements displayed on the digital boards. "We have set a target of December 2026 for completing the installation of the new signals and VMD boards," More added.
Current and Future Traffic Signal Count
Currently, Nashik operates with 40 traffic signals. Once the new installations are fully operational, this number will increase to 68, significantly enhancing the city's traffic management capabilities. Additionally, VMD boards will be positioned at every existing and new signal location, ensuring comprehensive coverage and information dissemination.
Tender Process and Industry Engagement
NMSCDCL has already floated tenders for the project, with the deadline for bid submissions set for February 10. A pre-bid meeting was recently conducted, attracting interest from agencies based in Pune, Hyderabad, and Nashik. During this meeting, participants requested a 15-day extension to facilitate their participation and raised several technical queries, which officials are currently addressing to ensure a smooth implementation process.
