A violent altercation that began on social media spilled onto the streets of Ahmedabad, leaving a young student injured and in shock. A 19-year-old BBA student was allegedly assaulted by a fellow student and his associates near a private university campus in Navrangpura on Thursday afternoon.
From Online Argument to Physical Assault
The victim, a second-semester BBA student who resides with his family in Isanpur, had exchanged messages with a college acquaintance on a social media platform on Tuesday. According to the police complaint, the online conversation took an ugly turn, becoming aggressive and threatening.
The situation escalated two days later. On Thursday around 2:30 PM, the student drove to the campus to collect a fee receipt. He parked his car near Gate No. 8, close to a commercial outlet. As he and a friend walked towards the college building, three youths approached them from inside the campus.
A Brutal Attack in Broad Daylight
One of the accused allegedly grabbed the victim by the shoulder and pulled him towards the rear of his car, accusing him of online abuse. When the student denied the allegations and stated he had records of the messages, the accused reportedly became enraged.
The assailant then slapped the victim. The blow was delivered with a metal bracelet on the attacker's hand, which struck the student's head and caused bleeding. The victim further alleged that he was subjected to verbal abuse and death threats in public. The two other youths accompanying the main accused also joined in and assaulted him. His friend intervened and managed to pull him away from the attackers.
Medical Aid and Police Action
Bleeding profusely from the head injury, the student and his friend took an autorickshaw to VS Hospital. Doctors treated his wound and registered a medico-legal case. After receiving medical attention, the victim approached the Navrangpura police station.
Taking swift action, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR). The charges have been filed under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and include sections for assault, criminal intimidation, and unlawful assembly. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
