Tejasvi Surya Alleges Banashankari Skywalk Scrapped for Flyover
Banashankari Skywalk Scrapped for Flyover: Tejasvi Surya

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Monday alleged that the long-pending proposal for a skywalk connecting the busy Banashankari Metro Station with the BMTC bus terminal had been abruptly shelved to make way for a flyover project. He accused the state government of prioritizing vehicular traffic over pedestrian safety and convenience.

Skywalk Proposal Shelved

The skywalk, which was planned to ease congestion and provide safe passage for thousands of daily commuters, has been a demand for years. According to Surya, the project was in advanced stages of planning but was suddenly dropped without public consultation. He claimed that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had initially agreed to the structure.

“The skywalk would have directly connected the metro station to the bus stop, reducing accidents and saving time for commuters. Instead, the government is pushing for a flyover that will only benefit vehicles,” Surya said in a statement.

Government's Stand

Officials from the BBMP, however, maintained that the skywalk was not scrapped but was being reconsidered as part of a larger traffic management plan. A senior BBMP official said, “The flyover is a separate project aimed at decongesting the junction. The skywalk may still be incorporated if feasible.” No official confirmation was provided on the timeline.

The Banashankari junction, one of Bengaluru's busiest, witnesses heavy footfall from metro and bus commuters. The absence of a dedicated pedestrian crossing has led to frequent accidents. According to traffic police data, at least three pedestrians were injured at the junction in the past six months.

Political Reactions

Surya’s allegations have sparked a political row, with the Congress-led state government denying any deliberate scrapping. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, “No decision has been taken to cancel the skywalk. We are examining all options for the benefit of the public.” However, Surya demanded a written assurance from the government.

Local residents and commuters have also expressed disappointment. “We have been waiting for this skywalk for years. It is frustrating to see it being sidelined for a flyover,” said Ramesh, a daily commuter.
