WhatsApp Status Update Leads to Domestic Help's Arrest in Bengaluru Theft Case

A domestic worker in Bengaluru found herself behind bars after a seemingly innocent social media post turned into damning evidence of theft. The case unfolded when her employer noticed her flaunting a luxury watch on WhatsApp that closely resembled one missing from his home.

The Digital Slip-Up That Unraveled the Crime

Soumya, a 26-year-old resident of Doddakannahalli, worked as domestic help at an apartment on Sarjapur Road. According to Bellandur police officials, the employer, Rohit, reported valuable items missing from his residence on December 8, 2025.

The stolen items included:

  • Gold jewellery weighing approximately 42 grams
  • A mangalsutra
  • A pair of imitation earrings
  • A Michael Kors branded wristwatch

When Rohit's family initially questioned Soumya about the disappearance, she firmly denied any involvement. Shortly afterward, she stopped coming to work altogether. At that point, the family did not file a formal police complaint.

The WhatsApp Status That Changed Everything

The case took a dramatic turn on December 28, 2025. Rohit happened to see a WhatsApp status update posted by Soumya. In the update, she was clearly wearing what appeared to be the same Michael Kors watch that had gone missing from his home.

Recognizing the distinctive timepiece, Rohit immediately took screenshots of the status as evidence. The digital trail had been established.

Armed with this proof, Rohit approached the Bellandur police station on January 5 and filed a formal complaint. He presented the screenshots showing Soumya wearing the watch. Police officials acted swiftly on the complaint and the digital evidence.

Arrest and Recovery of Stolen Items

On January 8, police arrested Soumya based on the complaint and evidence. During interrogation, she allegedly confessed to committing the theft. Officers conducted a search and recovered the stolen items from her possession.

The recovered property included:

  1. Gold jewellery valued at approximately Rs 4.5 lakh
  2. The Michael Kors wristwatch worth around Rs 20,000

Police have confirmed that further investigation into the matter continues. The case highlights how social media activity can sometimes provide crucial evidence in criminal investigations.

This incident serves as a reminder that digital footprints can be as revealing as physical ones in modern crime detection.
