BMW Hit-and-Run Claims Life of Gig Worker in Chandigarh
Police are intensifying their search for a BMW driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident. The incident claimed the life of a young Swiggy delivery executive in the early hours of Tuesday. Authorities face a complex challenge because the luxury car changed hands twice before the crash.
Confusion Over Car Ownership Slows Investigation
Investigators confirmed they identified the vehicle involved in the deadly collision. However, they have not yet arrested the driver. A major complication emerged when police discovered the BMW was sold by its previous owner approximately one week before the accident.
The new owner failed to register the vehicle in his name. This oversight created significant confusion about the car's current legal ownership. Police believe the present owner resides in Punjab. Teams have now been dispatched to that state to locate the seller and clarify the ownership trail.
Police Statement on the Investigation
A police officer involved in the case provided a clear statement on the next steps. "Only after tracing the present owner of the BMW will we be able to establish who was driving the car at the time of the accident," the officer said. The official added that confirming ownership is crucial to identifying and arresting the driver responsible for hitting the victim.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The tragic event unfolded between 2 am and 2.30 am on Tuesday. Khushmeet Rawat, a 26-year-old Swiggy delivery executive, was riding his motorcycle towards Sector 35 to deliver food orders. As he approached the Sector 34/35 light point, a speeding BMW struck his bike from behind.
The impact proved catastrophic. Khushmeet was thrown several metres onto the road. He sustained critical head injuries from the violent collision. The BMW driver did not stop to help. Instead, the driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Aftermath and Victim's Background
A passerby witnessed the aftermath and alerted the police control room. A PCR team rushed to the location. They transported the injured young man to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32. Doctors at GMCH examined him but declared him dead on arrival.
Authorities conducted a postmortem examination on Tuesday. Afterwards, they handed over the body to his grieving family members. Khushmeet Rawat originally hailed from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh. He had been living in a rented accommodation at Burail village in Sector 45, Chandigarh.
The police investigation continues as teams work to untangle the web of ownership and find the driver who left the scene.
