The Nepali Congress party has officially split. This happened on Wednesday after negotiations completely failed. The two main factions could not reach any agreement. One faction is led by general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma. The other faction is led by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Rebel Convention Elects New Leadership
Organizers held a rebel convention. They claimed a massive turnout. More than sixty percent of national delegates attended the event. The convention made key leadership decisions. It elected Gagan Thapa as the new president of the party.
The convention also filled other important positions. It elected Bishwo Prakash Sharma as a general secretary. Guru Ghimire was elected as the other general secretary. Mansoor was chosen for the role of vice chairman. This establishes a completely new leadership structure outside the old guard.
Growing Dissent Against Deuba's Leadership
Dissent had been building for many months. Members were unhappy with Sher Bahadur Deuba's leadership. A major point of conflict was a decision made in June 2024. Deuba made a unilateral decision to join a government coalition. This coalition was led by K P Sharma Oli. Oli is the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal – UML.
The deal promised the Nepali Congress leadership for half of the remaining parliamentary term. However, this move angered many within the party. Further discontent grew when corruption scandals dominated news headlines. Party members called on Deuba to withdraw support from the coalition. He consistently resisted these internal calls for action.
The failure of recent negotiations marks the final break. The split formalizes the deep divisions that have plagued the party. The political landscape in Nepal now faces a significant realignment. The future of the historic Nepali Congress party remains uncertain.
