ECI Addresses Voter List Errors, Includes Prominent Names After SIR Hearings

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has successfully resolved discrepancies in the voter list, with the final version published on Saturday including the names of several high-profile individuals who were previously summoned for Summary Revision (SIR) hearings. Among those now listed are Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, poet Joy Goswami, activist Chandra Bose, actor-politician Dev, and former MP Mimi Chakraborty. This development follows a series of hearings that highlighted both administrative errors and systemic issues in the voter registration process.

Amartya Sen's Age Discrepancy Corrected

On January 7, Amartya Sen received a notice from the ECI regarding a discrepancy in the age difference between him and his mother, Amita Sen. The notice incorrectly stated that the age gap was less than 15 years, whereas the actual difference is 19.5 years. Gitikantha Mazumder, who manages Sen's official matters in Santiniketan, expressed relief at the inclusion. "It is a great relief that finally his name is included. We express our thanks to ECI officials who immediately took steps to resolve the complication," Mazumder said, acknowledging the prompt action by authorities.

Joy Goswami Criticizes SIR Process, Approaches Supreme Court

Sahitya Akademi award winner Joy Goswami raised concerns about the SIR process, approaching the Supreme Court to advocate for revisions. He argued that the current system creates an "atmosphere of fear," with elderly individuals forced to stand in long queues, some even suffering from anxiety-related fatalities. Goswami was unable to attend the hearing in January personally, but his daughter, Bukun, coordinated efforts and confirmed his inclusion. "Both my parents' names and my name are there. This is a relief for us. One can't ignore what we did to ensure the names were there. There is too much harassment that the current process is throwing up," she told TOI, highlighting the challenges faced.

Chandra Bose Highlights Systemic Flaws in Voter Registration

Chandra Bose, whose name also appears on the list, pointed out broader issues with the SIR exercise. "Most of us who could provide all relevant documents are included in the final SIR list 2026. But many genuine voters who could not provide the documents are left out of the list," Bose stated. He emphasized that while SIR is essential for maintaining electoral integrity, its implementation in Bengal caused unnecessary inconvenience. "Linkage issues and logical discrepancies occurred mostly due to haphazard data entry. In a nation where politicians and ministers are not able to provide documents stating their basic qualifications, how can one expect the underprivileged to provide documents to prove their voting rights?" Bose questioned, critiquing the disparity in expectations.

Entertainment Figures Confirm Inclusion Amidst Relief

Tollywood star-turned-MP Dev, summoned for a hearing on January 14, confirmed his presence on the voter list. Similarly, actor and former MP Mimi Chakraborty verified that her name and her family's names, including her sister's, are included. "My full family's names are there. My sister was also called for a hearing. Her name is also there," Chakraborty said, reflecting a sense of resolution among those affected.

The resolution of these cases underscores the importance of accurate voter registration and the need for ongoing improvements in the SIR process to ensure inclusivity and fairness in India's democratic framework.
