Enhancing Chennai's Rail Network and Puducherry's Industrial Landscape
On Sunday, March 1, PM Modi will dedicate the Chennai Beach-Chennai Egmore fourth line to the nation. This critical rail line is designed to significantly enhance operational efficiency within the Chennai suburban rail network. By facilitating additional passenger and freight train services, it is expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters, including office-goers, IT professionals, students, and traders, easing congestion and improving travel reliability.
In Puducherry, the Prime Minister will dedicate various development projects worth over Rs 2,700 crore. The centerpiece is the inauguration of the sprawling 750-acre Karasur-Sedarapet Industrial Estate. This mega-estate is poised to become a hub for economic activity, housing:
- A dedicated pharma park
- A modern textile park
- An advanced IT Park
- A state-of-the-art research and development centre established by IIT Madras
- Advanced healthcare facilities operated by Jipmer
This integrated estate is projected to provide a major boost to industrial growth and employment generation across the Puducherry region.
Major Highway Projects to Slash Travel Times
Connectivity will receive a massive upgrade with the foundation stone laying for the four-laning of the Marakanam–Puducherry National Highway. This project is strategically important as it will:
- Reduce traffic congestion in Puducherry's urban areas.
- Cut travel time by nearly 50%, from one hour to approximately 30 minutes.
- Provide seamless connectivity among key National Highways and state highways.
- Enhance access to prominent destinations like Mamallapuram, the Kalpakkam atomic power station, and Auroville.
- Strengthen links between coastal villages and the Villupuram district headquarters.
- Boost tourism and overall economic activity in the region.
Following this, PM Modi will travel to Madurai to dedicate completed projects and lay foundation stones for new infrastructure, with a combined value exceeding Rs 4,400 crore.
Madurai and Southern Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Boost
In Madurai, a key highlight will be the inauguration of the four-laned Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram National Highway. This corridor is set to revolutionize connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu by:
- Providing faster access to major religious and tourist destinations, including Madurai, Rameswaram, and Dhanushkodi.
- Reducing travel time by around 40%, from one hour to about 35 minutes.
- Strengthening multi-modal connectivity by linking major railway stations at Madurai and Rameswaram, airports at Madurai and INS Parundu, and non-major ports at Pamban and Rameswaram.
- Integrating key economic nodes such as fishing clusters, a special economic zone, a mega food park, and a textile cluster, thereby catalyzing trade, industry, and socio-economic development across the region.
Modernization of Railways and Expansion of Public Broadcasting
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate eight redeveloped railway stations across Tamil Nadu at Morappur, Bommidi, Srivilliputtur, Sholavandan, Manaparai, Pollachi Junction, Karaikkudi Junction, and Tiruvarur Junction. These stations have undergone comprehensive upgrades featuring:
- Modern passenger-centric amenities
- Incorporation of local architectural elements and cultural aesthetics
- Improved accessibility and enhanced station buildings
- Modern waiting halls, lifts, and escalators

Furthermore, to enhance public information access, PM Modi will inaugurate three new FM relay transmitters at Kumbakonam, Yercaud, and Vellore. These transmitters will expand regional FM coverage, ensure uninterrupted broadcasting, and improve access to public broadcasting services across multiple districts in the state.
This visit underscores the central government's focused commitment to bolstering infrastructure, connectivity, and industrial growth in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, aiming to foster long-term economic prosperity and improved quality of life for residents.
